Jewelry Wear and Tear

Jewelry Wear and Tear

Every piece of jewelry will require care and maintenance over time. Gold, platinum, diamonds, and other materials are very durable but are not indestructible. Everyone wears their jewelry differently, and depending on the design of the piece, there may be more or less maintenance required.

How to slow down the wear and tear process

We know you want to wear your jewelry all the time but to help extend the longevity of your piece we recommend removing jewelry when:

  • Showering
  • Applying makeup/lotion
  • Exercising
  • Doing housework
  • Before going to bed

Types of care

We rank our jewelry's attention for the care and maintenance on a scale of low, medium, and high. We give our ratings based on the design of the jewelry as well as its wearability for every day. For example, a low maintenance design would be a solitaire ring with a high polish finish. This design will be easy to maintain, and you can wear it every day without worrying about caring for any side stones. The maintenance of your jewelry may be lower if you only plan to wear the piece for special occasions.

  • Low - an easy to maintain the style and that you should have checked at least once a year. These are typically pieces of jewelry with no or tiny side stones set into the piece. It will also include most earrings and necklaces because these types of jewelry will usually receive the least amount of wear and tear. For engagement rings, the lowest maintenance settings are high polish solitaires and rings that don't have many side diamonds.
  • Medium - you should have this style checked at least once every six months. Typical medium care pieces include tennis bracelets, rings with pavé side stones, and gemstone jewelry.
  • High - These types of styles take more work to maintain, and you should have this style checked at least once every three months. Pieces in this category can be 3D pavé rings, eternity rings, and other types of jewelry where there is very little metal to show off the stones.

We always encourage all of our clients to bring in their pieces as frequently as possible. The more often you come by we can check your jewelry, and also clean it for you as well. You are welcome to come by our store for free ring cleaning and checkups as often as you like. The cleaning and checkup usually take about 5-30 minutes, depending on how much cleaning the piece requires. The more frequently you visit, we can better help catch issues and keep your ring sparkling.

Keep in mind wearing your jewelry every day is like wearing the same outfit every day. Your jewelry, just like your clothes, needs to be maintained and cleaned. We recommend taking the time to make a weekly at-home assessment to keep an eye on your jewelry best and wash your ring with warm water and dish soap.
